about me
I was born in the riverlands of South Australia, raised in country Victoria, eventually settling in South East Queesland. After the road of architecture school I jumped straight into the unique field of designing themed attractions, which has been my career to date.
Ever since my childhood, I had an amibition to design theme parks. What started as sketches on graph paper or roller coasters built in computer games eventually morphed into a full blown career.
I felt architecture would be the right discilpline to study, and well, if the whole theme park didn’t pan out, then I could alway settle back into “regular” Architecture and find another niche in that.
It’s a industry with limited openings, so during my weekends and holidays I worked at Warner Bros. Movie World on the Gold Coast. It was a great way to see how theme parks really work on the ground, and gave me the opportunity to meet several people who were kind enough to open some doors for me.
My year in practice after Bachelors was spent at S2F Architects, where worked on healthcare and laboratory projects. Something different that offered a good deal of rigour for someone still learning the ropes.
Eventually once I graduated with my Masters of Architecture in 2013 , I began working in the Group Projects deparment for Village Roadshow Theme Parks, and over the next 5 years was involved in some way with practically everything built or planned across the companies portfolio. Being on the ‘client side’ meant a great deal of exposure to the entire process from design to construction to opening day and “making stuff happen”.
In 2018 I then joined Pico Play, one of the largest attraction design and build companies out there, where my work broadened to projects abroad, as well as ones in Australia. Here I was able to spend more time working on the feasability and design side of things, as well as the nitty gritty of fabrication (Pico Play has in house fabrication facilites in 3 countries)
But it’s not all about work. One of the great joys in my life is travel.
Many Australians become “grey nomads” upon retirement and spend years travelling around the country. I was determined not to wait that long, so have visited places as diverse as Exmouth, Tumut and the Warrumbungles, photographically documenting my travels along the way.
Of course, theme parks run in my blood, so any trip abroad are a great exuse to work through my “bucket list” visiting the great theme parks of Europe, the US and Asia. Still not quite done yet, and I’m not sure if I’ll ever be!
